چکیده

We introduce a new numerical method to model the fluid–structure interaction between a microcapsule 9 and an external flow. An explicit finite element method is used to model the large deformation of the capsule wall, which is treated as a bidimensional hyperelastic membrane. It is coupled with a boundary 11 integral method to solve for the internal and external Stokes flows. Our results are compared with previous studies in two classical test cases: a capsule in a simple shear flow and in a planar hyperbolic flow. The 13 method is found to be numerically stable, even when the membrane undergoes in-plane compression, which had been shown to be a destabilizing factor for other methods. The results are in very good 15 agreement with the literature. When the viscous forces are increased with respect to the membrane elastic forces, three regimes are found for both flow cases. Our method allows a precise characterization of the 17 critical parameters governing the transitions. Copyright q 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Evaluation of Fracture Parameters by Coupling the Edge-Based Smoothed Finite Element Method and the Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method

This paper presents a technique to evaluate the fracture parameters by combining the edge based smoothed finite element method (ESFEM) and the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM). A semi-analytical solution is sought in the region close to the vicinity of the crack tip using the SBFEM, whilst, the ESFEM is used for the rest of the domain. As both methods satisfy the partition of unity...

Estimation of PC-MRI Pressure Map Using Integral Form of Governing Equations and Spline Segments

In this paper, the boundary-based estimation of pressure distribution in the cardiovascular system is investigated using two dimensional flow images. The conventional methods of non-invasive estimation of pressure distribution in the cardiovascular flow domain use the differential form of governing equations. This study evaluates the advantages of using the integral form of the equations in the...

Numerical Simulation of the Hydrodynamics of a Two-Dimensional Gas—Solid Fluidized Bed by New Finite Volume Based Finite Element Method

n this work, computational fluid dynamics of the flow behavior in a cold flow of fluidized bed is studied. An improved finite volume based finite element method has been introduced to solve the two-phase gas/solid flow hydrodynamic equations. This method uses a collocated grid, where all variables are located at the nodal points. The fluid dynamic model for gas/solid two-phase flow is based on ...

Analytical and Numerical Investigation of Second Grade Magnetohydrodynamics Flow over a Permeable Stretching Sheet

In this paper, the steady laminar boundary layer flow of non-Newtonian second grade conducting fluid past a permeable stretching sheet, under the influence of a uniform magnetic field is studied. Three different methods are applied for solving the problem; numerical Finite Element Method (FEM), analytical Collocation Method (CM) and 4th order Runge-Kutta numerical method. The FlexPDE software p...
